about

It's really about an old tape deck ghetto blaster. I just thought "feed my funkbox was better than "bang my boombox." No really it started back at our 3rd show. It was Kish's birthday and we were playing at the Supermarket. Since we were playing the show for free we hoped people would maybe donate a bit of $ to the band. Monica arrived and with her usual consummate craftsmaship she had wrapped a box in gold foil and written a sign that said "feed my funkbox." Great alliteration and a nice shout out to a verse in Graham central station's hit "the Jam." I told her I was gonna make a song out of it.

A while later Brandon played this thing in rehearsal that was like a countrified Beastie Boys lick. It stuck with me and on a drive up to the Soo I wrote the most wonderfully ridiculous lyrics ever. I had gotten over my fear of writing rap lyrics with the gals intros to "Under your Funk" and I was inspired by George Clinton's ability to transform pop culture sayings and jingles into legitimately cool and catchy lyrics. I remembered this hockey chant that people would do back in the Soo (and probably everywhere hockey chants are chanted): Hockey moms with shakers up in the back row of the pee wee arena shouting "p-u-t i-t i-n. Put it in!" I figured if I made it hit hard on the one it would make a great chorus for someone asking for some funk music to be put in their tape deck. I also figured it would sound better if a girl sang those particular lyrics. Not sure why. At this we had written Moe "Lurch" and Jo was doing the soulful "Real World" and we needed something for MJ. I knew Monstermuffin could sell it. Now that we have rewritten the song to make it a crazy dancefloor filler, complete with Jason's incredible swaggerless swaggering rhymes in the breakdown I think you will agree that it all came together nicely.

From our box to yours.
