about

I didn't mean to write this song. This one just came out .
It's about the acceptance of loss. Things break and fall apart, things fade away, they die , but sometimes from those changes there can be a new idea, a new search, a new meaning. The song rolls between a crashing violence and a kind of numb slo-motion first person narrative of someone haunting a life that doesn't exist anymore, and then resolves itself in an affirmation to keep an open heart to both the past and the future. The main voice in the song goes from being way out in the mix, alone and whispery, to being part of a beautiful chorus of friends and angels and triumphant trumpets and when the violence returns the main voice has a new strength among his friends and affirms the last lines almost through gritted teeth.

This song is also notable for being the first one that Gord and I collaborated on writing. He and I sat in his living room around the piano that I keep at his place since my move to Montreal. Gordo was showing me some riffs he had been working on and I started making up lyrics on the spot. That morning a friend was coming to town and needed to crash at my place and so I had written a little note for him telling him where I had left the key. Anyone who has been through great changes probably understands where the rest might have come from. It is incredible what we as a band, and as friends, have all been through together. I am so grateful for it all. And grateful to share it with you.

Thank you for listening.
